The Royal Society

The Royal Society is the world’s oldest scientific academy. The Fellowship of the Society now numbers over 1,400 of the most distinguished male and female scientists from the UK and around the world, and the Society is looking forward to celebrating, in 2010, the 350th anniversary of its founding.

The Society continues to be at the cutting-edge of scientific progress, supporting the research of hundreds of top young scientists, engineers and technologists, and maintaining an unparalleled tradition, dating back to 1665, of publishing the latest research findings.

As a leading champion of science and mathematics education, the Society works to enhance and enrich young people’s experience of science through its Partnership Grants scheme, its annual Summer Science Exhibition and its newly developing associate schools scheme. Its policy work, including the ‘state of the nation’ reports, involves using the best available evidence to influence policymakers and opinion-formers. The Society recognises the power of working in partnership with other organisations to bring about change, and this is demonstrable by its close collaborations with SCORE and ACME (the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education).
