Latest SCORE report launches
SCORE has published its report on progression routes Choosing the right STEM degree course: Investigating the information available for prospective applicants. The report summarises the findings of research carried out by the Centre for Education and Industry, at Warwick University, on the qualifications and combinations of subjects that enable students to progress into STEM degrees.
The research highlights the difficulties for young people considering applying to enter higher education with the large range of courses available, the complexity of information and the lack of transparency in the admissions process. Other findings include the high value that university admissions tutors place on mathematics, and that for the widest range of options students who wish to progress into STEM-related HE courses would be best advised to attain at least two science-related A-levels. SCORE intends to use this evidence to assist the development of clear and accurate guidance for students, teachers and parents, with a view to ensuring that all candidates can have access to the same information.
SCORE partners are committed to ensuring that all learners have equal opportunity to progress into STEM post-16 and will work with the stakeholders involved to improve transparency in the admissions process and the ease of access to information. The Science Council is also working closely with students, teachers and admissions tutors to develop a toolkit for prospective students when applying for higher education courses. This will be made available through the Future Morph careers website, led by the Science Council.

SCORE publishes principles for Key Stage 2 assessment (February 2010)
The SCORE primary science working group has published a set of principles to inform discussions on the future of Key Stage 2 assessment of science. This follows the Government announcement that the abolished Key Stage 2 Sats will be replaced with national sampling and teacher assessment. This will take effect fully in 2012 and the interim years will be used to develop the process. In this paper SCORE considers the issues surrounding sampling and teacher assessment.
